NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior sprinter Cass Brown-Stewart has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon. The SLC weekly honor is the first for the Lumberjacks this season and the second for Brown-Stewart in his career.
Brown-Stewart posted the fastest 400-meter dash time in the NCAA so far this year during the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville on Friday, Jan. 9. He took first place out of 16 runners in the event with a mark of 47.00 seconds flat. His individual title was one of four for the SFA track and field program over the opening weekend of the 2015 indoor season.
The Fort Worth native also anchored SFA’s 4x400 meter relay to a second place finish on Friday evening. The group of Shawn Goff, My’Lik Kerley, Joshua Taylor and Brown-Stewart recorded a time of 3:12.43 – the seventh best time in the NCAA this year. The SFA relay team finished right behind the unit from No. 3 Arkansas.
Brown-Stewart and the rest of the SFA track and field team will return to action next weekend for the Texas A&M Team Invitational in College Station on Saturday, Jan. 17. Field events are slated to start at noon with running events set to begin at 12:30 p.m. from the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center.
