SFA Concludes Lady Demon Invite

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – The Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team concluded play at the Lady Demon Invite at host Northwestern State on Saturday.
SFA posted a combined 11-7 record over the two-day tournament, finishing 4-2 in doubles and 7-5 in singles draws. The Ladyjacks were one of nine schools to participate in the weekend tournament, as Grambling, Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern Miss and conference foes Lamar, Nicholls, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana and host NWST took part.
SFA fielded two teams in the doubles draws. Senior Malena Gordo and junior Valeria Terentyeva played in No. 1 doubles, while sophomores Denise Maxl and Macarena Sedano Acosta played in No. 2 doubles.
Maxl and Sedano Acosta took second place in No. 2 doubles, defeating both SHSU’s Bailey Van Dyke and Fabienne Gettwart and SLU’s Margaux Kaltenbacher and Madina Vorotnikova 8-4 to advance to the championship round of their draw. In the championship round, they fell 8-7 (4) to UL’s Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson.
Gordo and Terentyeva took third place in No. 1 doubles sandwiching an 8-4 loss to NWST’s Tatiana Larina and Aliona Ladutska with wins over SHSU’s Olivia Battye and Karen Martinez (8-4) and NWST’s Emily Kerr and Kateryna Piatakova (8-7 (6)).
All four of the participants in doubles played in singles for the Ladyjacks, as Maxl played No. 1, Gordo played No. 2, Terentyeva played No. 3 and Sedano Acosta played No. 4 singles. Gordo, Sedaon Acosta and Terentyeva each won two matches, while Maxl won one.
Terentyeva defeated Southern Miss’ Elena Roca 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 and Nicholls’ Katya Jordan 6-3, 5-7, 11-9, before falling to Lamar’s Anna Spengler 0-6, 7-6 (5), 12-10 in the championship match to finish second in her draw.
Sedano Acosta defeated LU’s Lara Delli Castelli 6-3, 6-1 and USM’s Katherine Waidner 6-1, 6-4 to finish third place in her draw.
Godro defeated SHSU’s Madeline Mortimore (6-4, 6-2) and NWST’s Ladutska (6-2, 6-3) in the consolation final.
Maxl defeated SHSU’s Battye 3-6, 6-1, 10-4 to finish fourth place.
SFA will continue its non-competition season on October 11-12, hosting the Schlief Tennis Invite.
