
SFA Women Place Second at Rice Invitational

HOUSTON - Stephen F. Austin's women notched a second-place finish at the 2014 Rice Invitational, highlighting a productive trip to Houston Friday evening. The SFA men placed sixth as both programs defeated a number of quality opponents.
The women finished with 63 points in the 3,950 meter race, placing second among the 14-team field as only the host Owls (27 pts.) had a better showing. The Ladyjacks had a pair of top-10 finishers as Shelby Pesek (13:54) finished seventh followed by Brittany Innis' (14:03) 10th-place showing.
Katrina Fite (14:09) placed 11th with Bridgette Kozar (14:19) and Samantha Ottman (14:20) rounding out the point-earners for the Ladyjacks, placing 17th and 18th respectively. Laurie Byrd (14:33) finished 24th for SFA with Taylor Bohr (14:36) placing 27th.
SFA finished well ahead of third-place LSU (97 pts.) and Southland Conference rival Lamar (101 pts.) with Houston (163 pts.) rounding out the top-five.
The Lumberjack men placed sixth in the 5,620 meter race with 142 pts., three points back of fifth-place LSU (139 pts.). Anthony Gallardo (17:25) was the first Lumberjack to cross the finish line in ninth-place, followed by Cody Brown (18:01) in 28th and Josh Torres (18:05) in 29th.
Edwin Munoz ran a time of 18:13 to finish 35th with Kaleb Vasquez (18:20) placing 41st to round out the point scorers for SFA. Connor McLain (18:21) finished 42nd with Ervin Mooney (18:29) placing 49th.
The Lumberjacks finished 18 points ahead of SLC foe Houston Baptist (160 pts.) and were 52 points better than eighth-place Lamar (194 pts.) and 127 points ahead of ninth-place Sam Houston State.
Up next for SFA is a return trip to College Station as both the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks will compete in the Texas A&M International on Saturday, September 20th.
