
SFA Falls 3-1 To Michigan In 2014 Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Senior Paige Holland recorded her first double-double of the season and the Stephen F. Austin women’s volleyball team forced Michigan to a fourth set in a 3-1 (14-25, 17-25, 25-22, 8-25) loss on Friday afternoon in the opening match of the Arkansas Invitational to start the 2014 season.
The Ladyjacks (0-1) contested the first three sets, taking the third 25-22 to extend the match, before the Wolverines (1-0) prevailed in the fourth.
Holland finished with 12 assists and 10 digs, adding two service aces, to highlight SFA.
Junior Jacque Allen led a Ladyjack attack that was limited to a .079 clip, finishing with nine kills. Junior Keeley Kainer and sophomore Justice Walker each finished with six kills, while senior Jill Ivy and junior Tori Bates landed five.
Defensively, junior libero OJ Olson captained the back line with 14 digs.
Sophomore Shannon Connell finished with 15 assists.
SFA, after dropping the first two sets, rallied out of the break to keep the match alive. The Ladyjacks quickly jumped out 6-4 on MICH, building its lead to five points up 15-10, before the Wolverines made a late push to tie it 16-16. Both teams traded points, pulling even three more times, before an attack error on MICH gave SFA a 21-20 edge. The Ladyjacks outscored the Wolverines 4-2 the rest of the way to take the third set 25-22.
MICH responded, taking the fourth set 25-8 to take the match 3-1.
SFA will play two matches on Saturday to close the out the tournament. The Ladyjacks will face Arkansas at 11 a.m. on the SEC Network, before ending with Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m.
