NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team picked up their first win over a Pac-12 opponent in program history in a 2-0 statement win over Oregon State on Friday night at the SFA Soccer Field to open the 2014 season.
The Ladyjacks (1-0) got goals from sophomore Jasmine White (1) and freshman Hanna Barker (1), while the SFA defensive front limited the Beavers (0-1) to just four shots across the match. Senior goalkeeper Morgan Glick (1-0) picked up her first shutout of the season, making two saves across the full 90 minutes in the net.
In the first meeting between the two programs on the pitch, the Ladyjacks and OSU played nearly a silent first half until White's goal in the 40th minute. The native of Houston, Texas, scored what later proved the game-winner for SFA on a feed from junior Chantal Curry in the box that set up for a one-on-one opportunity. The Ladyjacks then limited the Beaver attack over the closing minutes of the period, having outshot OSU 5-1, to take the 1-0 lead into the break.
The intensity for SFA maintained in the second period, as Barker was able to provide a cushion goal, in her collegiate debut, that put the Ladyjacks out front 2-0. In the 62nd minute, Barker sent back a deflection in the box, as senior Zuri Prince picked the assist.
The Ladyjacks will now shift their focus to Texas A&M, traveling to College Station for a 7 p.m. match with the Aggies on Sunday at Ellis Field. The meeting marks the first time the two teams have met since TAMU eliminated SFA in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Head coach Wally Crittenden is also making his return, having served on the Aggie staff from 2010-12 before taking over the Ladyjack program.
