SFA 4x400 Finishes 14th at NCAA Championship

EUGENE, Ore. – With the goal of reaching the final at the NCAA Championship on their minds all season, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 4x400 meter relay came just shy of the mark on Thursday finishing in 14th place.
The tandem of Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder, Josh Taylor and Cass Brown-Stewart combined to run 3:06.91 and finish seventh in their heat. The time would hold well against the third heat and finish in 14th overall.
With Florida in their heat, the Lumberjacks needed to stay close on the Gators’ heels. Florida broke the three-minute mark at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds to qualify for the championship meet, and it would have taken a third school record on the year for SFA to advance to the final round.
Instead of another school record under their belts, the Lumberjacks ran just short of the mark and closed an historic season for the group. This group of runners broke the school record earlier this year at the prestigious Texas Relays, defeating a number of traditional powers in track and field. They improved on their school record at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds to advance to the championship site as well.
Also competing on Day 2 of the NCA Championships for SFA was long jumper Jamal Peden. He was making his debut at the championship meet and came away in 23rd place.
Peden posted a jump of 6.67 meters (21-10.75) on his second attempt to improve his mark but not his standing at the time. He fouled on his last attempt to try and make the final.
The Lumberjacks will have their final entry of the meet compete on Friday with Taylor running in the final of the 400 meter hurdles. He ran 50.58 seconds to grab the final at-large spot in the final. He is set to run at 6:33 p.m. and will be the first event on the track.
