NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Heading into this week’s Southland Conference Championships, Stephen F. Austin pole vaulter Colton Ross will be the defending Southland Conference Field Athlete of the Week.
Ross was recognized as the league’s top athlete on Tuesday after posting the No. 1 mark in the world so far this year at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday.
Ross cleared a new school record height of 5.70 meters (18-8.25) to win the competition and stand tied for the No. 1 ranking in the NCAA this year, and the world.
This is Ross’ second SLC Field Athlete of the Week honor during outdoor season this year. He also received the award on April 2 after opening his outdoor season with a runner-up finish at the Texas Relays.
With his mark of 5.70 meters Ross is now tied with defending NCAA champion Sam Kendricks of Ole Miss along with two professional vaulters for the top mark in the world this year.
SFA has had a total of seven track or field athletes of the week from the Southland this outdoor season combined among the men and women.
Ross along with the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks look to repeat last year’s sweep of the conference titles this week as SFA heads to the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Conway, Arkansas. Competition is set to begin Friday.
