AUSTIN, Texas - Colton Ross tallied another victory in the pole vault for Stephen F. Austin and cleared the No. 1 height in the nation this season in the process.
Ross vaulted 5.70 meters (18-8.25) to tie NCAA defending champion Sam Kendricks for the top mark in the NCAA this season at the Longhorn Invitational. He also broke the SFA school record previously held by Adam Kuel at 5.58 meters (18-4.00).
At the Longhorn Invitational, Ross went head-to-head with Akron's Shawn Barber at the end of the competition. Ross was in the lead after clearing 5.60 meters (18-4.50) on his first attempt with Barber clearing on his second. Barber failed to clear 5.70 and Ross cleared on his third and final attempt to move atop the leaderboard in the NCAA.
SFA's pole vaulters were the only members of the track and field team in action this weekend with Daven Murphree and Cameron Meyer joining Ross in Austin.
The freshman, Murphree, came one centimeter shy of his best performance as a Lumberjack clearing 5.20 meters (17-00.75) to tie for seventh place. Meyer tied for ninth place with his clearance of 5.05 meters (16-6.75).
All three of SFA's men's pole vaulters are currently ranked in the top 45 in the NCAA.
Now SFA will turn its attention to the Southland Conference Championships next week in Conway, Ark. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are looking to repeat their sweep of winning both outdoor titles a year ago.
