NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Fresh off some of the top performances in the nation last week, the Stephen F. Austin track and field team will host its only home meet of the season this week with action on both Friday and Saturday.
This Skechers Carl Kight Invitational is the largest meet SFA has hosted with 18 teams coming to participate over two days. Action starts Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with field events. A distance carnival begins on the track later that night at 7:15 p.m. with all three distance events scheduled.
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks boast some of the top athletes in the nation in their respective events as pole vaulter Colton Ross is coming off his runner-up finish at the prestigious Texas Relays last week. His mark of 5.05 meters (18-00.50) ranks third in the nation.
SFA’s men’s 4x400 won the Texas Relays with a school record time of 3:06.60 defeating some of the traditional powers in the world of track and field in the process and ranking third in the nation so far this year.
Combined the ‘Jacks currently have nine athletes ranked in the top 50 in the nation in their respective events, four of whom are in the top 15 including Ross in the pole vault.
Javelin thrower Madison Johnston broke her own school record earlier this season and is currently ranked No. 11 in the NCAA with her throw of 49.39 meters (162 feet).
Josh Taylor stands fifth in the nation in the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 50.92 seconds at the Texas Relays, Jamal Peden is ninth in the long jump at 7.55 meters (24-9.25).
In addition to the men’s 4x400 relay, the women’s 4x400 is ranked No. 22 at the moment. The men’s 4x100 relay clocked in a 40.70 seconds in Alabama to open the season and stands 36th on the list.
Teams from across the state and even as far east as Mississippi and as far north Kansas will be traveling to participate in the meet, and some of the top athletes in the nation will be at Homer Bryce Stadium this weekend to take on the ‘Jacks.
Seven Southland Conference foes will be competing at the Skechers Carl Kight Invitational providing a good test for the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks against their conference rivals Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southeast Louisiana. Missouri Valley Conference power Wichita State also will be competing along with Louisiana Tech, a team that dominated the Western Athletic Conference for years and now looks to be a force in Conference USA.
Texas Southern, Alcorn State, Rice, Louisiana-Monroe, UT-Tyler, Southern Arkansas and Wiley College also will be in action.
General admission tickets to the meet are $5 and SFA students get in free with their student ID.
