NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Championship season is almost here for track and field, and the Stephen F. Austin team is set for its final meet before the Southland Conference Championships this weekend.
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are headed to the J. Fred Duckett Twilight hosted by Rice on Saturday where SFA will face the hosting Rice Owls along with a number of teams from the Southland Conference and across the region, including No. 26 USTA's men.
SFA currently has eight athletes ranked in the top 50 in the NCAA in their respective events, plus the men's and women's 4x400 relays. Those athletes will be on display at the Duckett Twilight as they look to improve heading into the conference championship in two weeks.
The men's 4x400 relay is ranked No. 13 in the nation with a time of 3:06.60 earlier this year. All four of those runners will be in the same heat of the open 400 meters as well on Saturday before running the relay.
Jamal Peden is SFA's top-ranked individual, standing at No. 5 in the nation in the men's long jump heading into the weekend. He will be the final jumper in a field of 28 on Saturday.
Action from Holloway Track begins at noon with the start of field events. Running events are slated for a 4 p.m. start. Live results will be available on Saturday with a link provided online at sfajacks.com and riceowls.com.
While SFA was preparing for the Duckett Twilight, Madison Johnston was at the 120th Penn Relays on Thursday competing in the javelin. Johnston finished eighth with a mark of 45.82 meters (150-03). The field of 13 athletes included some of the top collegiate throwers in the nation. All 12 of the NCAA Division I athletes were ranked in the top 40 this season, and the one Division III thrower is ranked third at that level and finished ninth behind Johnston.
The Penn Relays is the longest running track and field meet in the United States and regularly brings some of the best athletes to compete. The meet is highlighted by its depth in all its relay events, including distance and sprint relays.
