SAN ANTONIO, Texas – It was a solid two days to start the UIW Invitational for the combined events group from Stephen F. Austin track and field with wins from the men and women and a series of personal bests from both groups as well.
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks saw Cody Rhodes win the decathlon at the UIW Invitational on Friday with 6,632 points accumulated over the 10 events on Thursday and Friday. Shambrail Woods dominated the field for the Ladyjacks winning the heptathlon with a personal best score of 5,100 points.
SFA saw Christian Bean, Jamal Davis, Hunter Key and Andrew Boettcher all score personal bests in the decathlon as well with the Lumberjacks sweeping the top four spots in the event and Boettcher taking seventh.
Bean scored 6,570 points with personal records in four of the 10 events. Davis also had four PR’s. Key saw drastic improvement with bests in five events. All the Lumberjacks had a number of PR’s in the combined events, including 110 meter hurdles and the long jump but due to high winds, those marks were wind-aided and not countable for record keeping.
Woods shined over two days in her seven events dominating the field and cracking the 5,000-point plateau for the first time in her career. She posted two PR’s on Thursday afternoon to take the lead and clocked the heptathlon with another in the 800 meters.
Freshman Madeline Kaufmann saw improvement in two events but was just shy of surpassing her best overall score with a fairly consistent performance.
Friday marked the beginning of field events at the UIW Invitational, and SFA again saw its throwers continue improving and post good showings.
Jessica Spelling won the women’s shot put with her mark of 14.44 meters (47-04.50). Her mark was just seven centimeters shy of tying her personal best. Adrienne Lewis finished sixth at 12.41 meters (40-08.75) almost matching her distance from her debut last week. Freshman Kacie Tuerck improved by nearly eight inches with her toss of 11.08 meters (36-04.25).
For the men, Derek Orlando took fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 44.69 meters (146-07). He tied his throw from his debut last week at the Skechers Carl Kight Invitational.
Both the men and women will be back in action Saturday for the conclusion of the UIW Invitational with more field events and running events starting at 8 a.m.
SFA’s trio of men’s pole vaulters will compete at the Texas Invitational in another strong field assembled for the event in Austin.
