TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The 2014 cross country season comes to a close after the 2014 NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championships Course in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore runner Charles Mathenge represented SFA at the event, completing the 10K course in 33:38 to finish 235th overall among the best runners in the nation.
It was the first time SFA sent a cross country athlete to nationals since 2012 and just the eighth time overall in program history.
Mathenge broke the school record at both the 8K and 10K distances this season. He shattered the school's 8K record at the Southland Conference Championships on Nov. 3 in Natchitoches, La. with a time of 23:42 en route to a runner-up finish and First Team All-Conference honors. Mathenge then broke the record in the 10K at the NCAA South Central Regional meet on Nov. 14 with a mark of 29:58 - a time that was good for a seventh place finish.
Both the men's and women's teams placed second in the conference meet during the year and Mathenge's run to nationals put an exclamation point on what was a tremendous year for the SFA distance program.
Mathenge and his teammates will now have some time to recover before the 2015 indoor track and field season begins in January.
