FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin women's cross country runner Brittany Innis was named the Southland Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
The honor is the first of the season for Innis and comes after a breakout weekend at the University of Alabama Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama last Friday.
Innis finished the 5k course at Harry Pritchett Running Park in 17:55 to place 17th out of 225 women competing at the Division I level. The true freshman, who has placed in the top three on the women's side in all four competitive races this season, posted a team-best time on Friday for the first time in her young collegiate career to help the Ladyjacks earn a fifth place showing as a team out of 25 Division I programs.
SFA outran several quality schools at the event including Clemson, South Carolina, LSU, UAB and Tennessee, while beating the only other two schools from the SLC - Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi - by large margins.
Innis has participated at a 5,000-meter distance just twice this season, posting a season-best time of 17:39 in the Chile Pepper Festival at the University of Arkansas on Oct. 4.
A Cedar Park, Texas native, Innis has been an integral part of the SFA women's cross country program in 2014, leading the Ladyjacks to four, top five team finishes this year.
The SFA cross country teams return to action on Monday, Nov. 3 for the Southland Conference Championships in Natchitoches, La.
