LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – Senior Zuri Prince recorded the golden goal, heading in a corner kick in the 97th minute, as the Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team downed McNeese State in a 1-0 thriller on Friday night at Cowgirl Field.
The header broke up 96:08 of scoreless play between the Ladyjacks (9-2-1, 5-0 SLC) and McN (4-8-1, 2-4 SLC), as SFA improved to 5-0 in Southland Conference play.
“What a game,” head coach Wally Crittenden said. “McNeese came out and had a fantastic press that we had to address and make some adjustments to break. Their commitment and energy demanded a lot from our players and we had to respond. Toward the end of the first half we began to turn the possession and shots back toward our favor. Through the second half and into overtime, we were very good in our attacking schemes and in limiting the types of chances we gave up.
“We knew this game was going to be a battle and their senior night only added to the intensity. Now, we have to recover and that means hydrate, sleep and eat. We will begin to focus on Sunday tomorrow night, but we have a lot traveling to do before that.”
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Glick (7-2-1) picked up her seventh win of the season in the net, recording five saves across 96-plus minutes.
The Ladyjacks led 19-13 in shots and held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. SFA also led 8-4 in corners.
Both teams went all of regulation without finding the back of the net, before the golden goal haulted the match in the Ladyjacks’ favor in the first extra period. On SFA’s eighth and final corner kick of the match, sophomore Brooke Dunnigan sent the ball in and found Prince for the game-winner.
SFA will play one more match on the road, traveling to Abilene Christian on Sunday. The match with the Wildcats is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Shotwell Stadium.
