ORLANDO, Fla. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday, with a loss to George Washington and win over Elon, at the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic in the Venue at UCF.
Junior Paige Holland recorded her second double-double of the season and Jill Ivy recorded two double-figure kill performances on the day.
SFA (5-1) will play one more match in Orlando, squaring off against tournament host Central Florida on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 6:00 p.m. (EST) in the round-robin finale.
GW 3, SFA 2
Despite out hitting George Washington and having three Ladyjacks record double-figure kills, SFA dropped its first match of the 2013 season in a 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 10-15) loss to the Colonials (2-2).
“It was a disappointing match this morning,” head volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys said. “We had our opportunities in the third and fourth sets to finish them off. Unfortunately we didn’t execute at key times. I’m glad we get to turn around and play again this evening.”
Ivy (17), Justice Walker (14) and Jacque Allen (10), paced the Ladyjack attack which hit a .239 clip over five sets.
Holland finished with 43 assists, while sophomores OJ Olson and Madison Martin recorded 18 and 11 digs respectively.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for SFA, who had swept each of its last three opponents, and is the first to GW since the two schools met in 1996.
The Ladyjacks improved their win streak to 12 straight sets, knocking off the Colonials 25-21 and 25-18 in the first two sets to take a 2-0 advantage at the break.
SFA held GW to a .108 attack percentage in the third set, but was unable to retake the lead after falling behind 13-12. The Colonials would only relinquish the lead two times, both in the fourth set, as they won the next two sets to take the match.
SFA 3, Elon 2
Holland finished with 38 assists and 10 kills as SFA claimed a 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 26-24, 18-25, 15-10) edge over Elon (2-3) in the nightcap.
Olson finished with 26 digs and freshman Laiken Britt added 12 in the five set victory.
After falling to the Phoenix in the opening set, SFA quickly rallied to even things up 1-1 heading into the half. Holland led the Ladyacks with four kills and Walker recorded four blocks in the 26-24 second set victory.
SFA repeated the outcome in the third set, breaking a 24-24 tie to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Keeley Kainer led the Ladyjacks at the net, recording our kills. Ivy finshed close behind Kainer with three kills, while freshman Laiken Britt recorded two service aces.
The momentum would shift in the fourth set, with SFA falling 25-18 to even the match, but the Ladyjacks charged out to a 7-3 lead before arriving at the 15-10 final in the fifth set to claim the victory.
