ORLANDO, Fla. – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, before falling 3-2 (22-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-23, 6-15) to Central Florida Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic in the Venue at UCF.
Junior Paige Holland and senior Leslie Jackson were named to the all-tournament team following the match. The all-tournament recognition is the second for Holland in as many weeks.
The loss is the second of the season for the Ladyjacks (5-2) and first to the Knights (6-1) since the 1997 season.
Junior Jill Ivy led the attack with 17 kills across five sets, while middle blockers Jackson and Justice Walker finished with 12 kills each, respectively.
Holland recorded 50 assists and sophomore OJ Olson finished with 17 digs.
SFA trailed for the majority of the opening set, before an attack error by UCF’s Angelica Crump gave the Ladyjacks a 22-21 lead. The lead was short-lived however, as the Knights reclaimed the edge on an attack error from Ivy and recorded consecutive blocks to take a 1-0 advantage.
After falling 25-15 in the second set, SFA rallied out of the break. Ivy recorded 12 kills, six each, between the third and fourth sets to help the Ladyjacks tie the match and force a fifth and deciding set. The Knights would answer, hitting a .526 clip and getting five kills Taylor Gallart to claim the victory over SFA.
The Ladyjacks, after opening the 2013 season with seven games on the road, will return to Shelton Gym for their home opener verse Louisiana Tech Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 p.m.
