BEAUMONT, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team went on the road to defeat a tough Lamar Lady Cardinals team, 3-0 Friday evening, recording their seventh shutout of the season.
With the victory SFA (7-2-1, 2-1-0) matched their best 10-game start in school history, tying the previous record held by the 2011 and 2003 squads.
"The girls came out on point tonight and were able to impose themselves in both possession and in territory, which is always good," SFA head coach Wally Crittenden said. "Lamar is a great team with several talented players which kept us on our toes the entire match. That being said, everyone was prepared to make a difference when given the chance. It was also a night in which we were able to test several different schemes and take a look at different personnel as we continue to build depth into October."
The Ladyjacks got a multiple-goal performance from junior forward Chelsea Raymond, who scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season and the 34th and 35th goals of her career. Raymond now needs just three more goals to tie Amanda Alders (38 goals) for the most career goals in SFA history.
SFA wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, scoring the game’s first goal in the ninth minute on a goal from Raymond on an assist from junior defender Megan Dunnigan.
The Ladyjacks entered halftime with a 1-0 lead but quickly put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half. Senior midfielder Melissa Gaudet increased the SFA lead to 2-0 in the 50th minute with her second goal of the year coming off a free kick. SFA then put the game out of reach just three minutes later on Raymond’s second goal of the night, beating Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot for a second time.
SFA dominated possession, outshooting the Lady Cardinals 17-4 at night’s end and 9-1 shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Glick earned the victory at the net for the Ladyjacks, having to make just one save in the first 45 minutes to improve to 2-1-1 before Lacey Lee took over in the second half.
The matchup marked a rematch of the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament Championship game.
The Ladyjacks will now have off until Oct. 4 when they host new Southland Conference member Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. before traveling to Sam Houston St. on Oct. 6.
