KILGORE, Texas - Stephen F. Austin outfielder Matthew Dickey etched his name in the books for the East Texas Pump Jacks of the Texas Collegiate League, breaking the league's single-season stolen base record with his 40th of the summer season.
Dickey took the record Thursday, Aug. 8, in a 5-2 win over the Texas Marshalls. The Kilgore, Texas, native, wasted no time breaking the record in front of a hometown crowd. Dickey led off the bottom of the first with a single into the right center gap before swiping second on the very next pitch.
After eclipsing the milestone, Dickey was pulled from the game in front of a standing ovation. Dickey walked off the field with the bag in hand.
The Lumberjack tied the record one day earlier, on Aug. 7, in a 7-5 win over the Acadiana Cane Cutters and two days after fellow summer-league teammate and SFA signee Garrett McMullen tied the TCL's single-season doubles mark.
The Pump Jacks will play one more game against the Marshalls, before the postseason begins Saturday, Aug. 10, against the Brazos Valley Bombers.
