NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 2
Back on March 2, 2013, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's basketball team welcomed in the Northwetern State Demons in a showdown that for all intensive purposes would decide the Southland Conference regular season title.
The Lumberjacks led for all but just 65 seconds of the entire game and needed every point it could get after the Demons erased a six-point halftime deficit to take a one-point lead with just 45 seconds remaining on a pair of foul shots from Jalan West.
With SFA trailing 63-62, Desmond Haymon hit a driving go-ahead layup with less than 12 seconds to play and Wests's three-point try at the buzzer rimmed out, giving the Lumberjacks a 64-63 win over the Demons in a battle of first-place teams.
The win put SFA in the driver's seat for its third Southland Conference title and helped clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the Southland Conference Tournament and an automatic berth in the NIT.
On the game-winning possession, Nikola Gajic grabbed perhaps the rebound of the season by chasing down a missed shot from Antonio Bostic, allowing Haymon to convert the layup just seconds later.
Taylor Smith led the `Jacks in the scoring with 18 points, 16 coming in the opening half, and 11 rebounds in 40 minutes for his ninth double-double of the season. Bostic added 15 points and two steals, whie Haymon came up with a big second half, scoring 10 of his 13 points in the final period.
Be on the lookout next week to see which moment was worthy of the #SFATopMoment No. 1 spot.
