NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 17
The Southland Conference has been witness to arguably the most consistent runs of success since the arrival of Phil Olson as the head coach of the Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s track and field programs. That run of success was taken to a whole new level in 2013.
The track and field team set a program record by sending nine athletes to the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships this past season. In addition to the overall number of athletes who qualified, SFA also set a program record by earning five All-America honors in one season.
After sweeping the 2013 Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Championships, SFA sent thrower Jon Arthur and pole vaulter Colton Ross to the indoor championships, where Ross received second-team All-America honors with his 15th place finish.
Two months later, SFA made a clean sweep of the conference titles by taking the men’s and women’s outdoor crowns. Following the conference championships, seven Lumberjack and Ladyjack athletes qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., all walking away with All-America recognition.
Arthur returned to the championships in the shot put, where he earned second-team All-America honors with a 13th-place finish. Not to be outdone by the upperclassman, sophomore Madison Johnston was impressive in her first experience at the championship meet. She recorded a throw of 162-0 in the javelin placing ninth overall, also bring home second-team all-america honors.
On the track, the youthful team of Torin Crowder, Shawn Goff, Josh Taylor and Cass Brown-Stewart earned third-team All-America honors by finishing 21st in the men’s 1,600-meter relay. Brown-Stewart returned to the track one more time as an individual earning first-team All-America honors in the 400-meter dash.
The championship meet wasn’t the final highlight for the track and field teams. Brown-Stewart also advanced to the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships where he competed for a spot on the national team.
