FRISCO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team placed five Ladyjacks on the 2013 Academic All-Southland Conference teams, as voted by the league’s awards committee, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Defender Megan Dunnigan, midfielder Melissa Gaudet and goalkeeper Morgan Glick, were named to the first team, while midfielder Brenda Salazar and defender Rachel Owens garnered second-team honors for SFA. The five academic honorees led all teams in the conference.
Dunnigan, a native of Round Rock Texas (Vista Ridge HS), captured her second all-academic honor after bolstering a 3.85 GPA this fall. The junior, also a two-time first-team All-SLC and 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-Central Region second team selection, anchored a defense that won 12 of its 16 games via the shutout. Dunnigan and the Ladyjack defense gave up just 12 goals on the season, while offensively she added two assists and one goal.
Gaudet, a native of Bayside, Nova Scotia (Halifax West HS), earned her first academic honor, with a 3.52 GPA. The academic nod is the second postseason honor for the senior who was also named first team all-conference, both honors being the first of her career. Gaudet led the Ladyjacks and finished fourth in the SLC with six assists and seventh in assists per game (0.30).
Glick, a native of Boerne, Texas (Champion HS), rounded out the SFA members on the first team after posting a 3.94 GPA across the fall. The junior was apart of a goalkeeper tandem that recorded 12 shutouts on the season. Glick appeared in 22 of the Ladyjacks’ 23 games, allowing just five goals and making 31 saves in 91 shots faced to post a 6-1-1 record in the net. The academic honor is the first of her career.
Salazar and Owens each captured their first academic honors with their respective second-team nods.
Salazar, a native of Sugar Land, Texas (Fort Bend Austin HS), was named to the All-SLC second team at the end of the regular season. In the classroom, Salazar held a 3.60 GPA across the fall, while on the field she tied Guadet with six assists to lead the team and finshed seventh in the SLC in assists per game (0.30).
Owens, a native of Houston, Texas (Memorial HS), was the fifth and final member of the Ladyjacks to land on the all-academic squads. Owens, a 2013 honorable mention All-SLC selection, was a part of the Southland’s premier defense, while also adding two goals offensively.
All five girls helped SFA to its third consecutive conference title and eighth overall in program history. Each Ladyjack was a key component of the 2013 team that broke or tied 13 school records.
In order to be eligible for the academic teams, all nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
