NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team will open the 2013-14 regular season Friday, Nov. 8, against UT-Tyler at 7:00 p.m. inside William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The defending 2012-13 Southland Conference regular season champion Lumberjacks will be looking for their fourth consecutive season-opening win. Last season, SFA kicked off its conference title-run with an 84-30 blasting of Howard Payne under former head coach Danny Kaspar.
SFA is 2-0 all-time against the Patriots, having last played UT-Tyler in the 2011-12 season. The `Jacks have cruised to easy victories over the Patriots, with a 93-57 win their last time out and a 63-47 victory in the 2007-08 season. The 2011 matchup was a benchmark game, as SFA put five players in double figures en route to a season-high 93 points.
Last season, the `Jacks held Howard Payne to less than 20 points in either half as it cruised to a 84-30 season-opening victory.
SFA is 9-4 in its last 13 season openers, all of which coming under Kaspar. First-year head coach Brad Underwood and the `Jacks are coming off an 87-54 exhibition win over Arkansas Tech on Nov. 1.
In the exhibition, SFA placed three `Jacks in double-figures, highlighted by junior forward Jacob Parker.
SFA enters the season third and fourth in the Southland Conference preseason polls.
Following the season opener, the `Jacks will take on their former head coach and former SLC foe Texas State in San Marcos Nov. 11.
