SFA Faces Strong Opponents at Cougar Classic

HOUSTON, Texas – The Ladyjack tennis team faced a tough group of nationally ranked teams, individuals and doubles duos on Friday at University of Houston’s Cougar Classic.
The field featured 11 schools including nationally ranked No. 18 Texas Tech, No. 22 Rice, and No. 52 Arkansas. Also competing were Houston, Maryland, Texas State, Kansas, Lamar, Prairie View A&M, Iowa State and Northwestern State.
Rachel Pierce (senior) lost a tight first set to Texas State’s Pippa Carr 6-7 (5), but served her way back into the match with a 6-2 second set win and cruised in the third, claiming the match 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Malena Gordo took on Houston’s Elena Kordolaimi in her first singles match of the tournament. Gordo battled Kordolaimi in the first set to force a tiebreaker, but fell 7-6 (3) and was blanked in the second 6-0.
SFA Newcomer Macarena Sedano Acosta also clashed with a tough opponent in Jane Stewart (Rice). Stewart grabbed the first frame 6-3, but Sedano Acosta fought back to win the second set 7-5. In the third, both players kept at it reaching a tiebreaker, but Sedano Acosta lost those crucial points for a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (1) finish.
Sedano Acosta also had a great performance on the doubles court with partner Julia Lorca. The pair wrestled with Emma Waites and Ksenia Pronina of Iowa State to reach another tiebreaker. The Ladyjack pair handled Waites and Pronina 9-8 (3) for the win.
The second day of the Cougar Classic will take place Saturday at the John E. Hoff Courts.
