NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team will open their 2013-14 road schedule and face former head coach Danny Kaspar, when the Lumberjacks take on Texas State Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7:00 p.m. inside Strahan Coliseum.
SFA (1-0) will face a former Southland Conference foe in the Bobcats’ (0-1) home opener and debut for Kaspar. In his 13 years in Nacogdoches, he posted a 246-141 (.636) overall record and guided the ‘Jacks to seven 20-win seasons, three Southland Conference regular-season titles, two NIT appearances and a berth in the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament.
Last season, SFA went 27-5 (.844) en route to a school record in wins and third SLC title. The ‘Jacks posted a 16-2 (.889) conference mark. Along the way SFA picked up tough road wins at Florida International, Tulsa and Oklahoma, before closing out the season by dropping a heartbreaking one-point loss at Stanford in the NIT. Kaspar was honored by the league following the season being named SLC Coach of the Year. It was the second time in his career that he has received the honor.
SFA is 99-67 (.596) against TXST since the two schools first met back in 1925. Their last meeting came in the 2011-12 season, when the Bobcats were still a conference opponent, with the ‘Jacks prevailing 71-63. Following the season TXST left for SLC for the Western Athletic Conference. The Bobcats joined the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2013.
In its season opener, SFA got career-highs from Jacob Parker and Nikola Gajic in a 90-64 thumping of UT-Tyler and gave first-year head coach Brad Underwood the first victory of his career in his debut. With the win, the ‘Jacks improved to 10-4 in their last 14 season openers and 3-0 all-time against the Patriots.
Following the game in San Marcos, SFA will travel to Austin for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Texas as part of its four-game road stretch.
