FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin senior middle blocker Sabrina Burns was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week after conference officials announced the selection Monday afternoon.
It is the first time in Burns' career she has received the weekly honor and marks the fifth time SFA has won a weekly honor from the league, the third time on defense.
Burns, a senior from McAlester, Okla., moved into the all-time top 10 in blocks at SFA over the weekend with 17 rejections in three matches, helping the Ladyjacks to a pair of wins.
She averaged 1.47 blocks per set in addition to 2.58 kills and a solid .253 attack percentage for the week. Burns had at least 10 kills in all three matches last week and added four blocks in a 3-1 loss to Houston Baptist before registering nine rejections in a four-set win over McNeese and four more in a 3-1 win over Lamar.
Burns currently ranks sixth in the Southland Conference with 1.00 blocks per set for the season, but as in years past, has upped her game in league play, averaging 1.13 blocks per set against Southland opponents.
Burns and the Ladyjacks return to action on Thursday at Southeastern Louisiana before taking on Nicholls in Thibodaux, La., on Saturday.
