NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA cross country teams kicked off the 2011 season on Friday with a head-to-head meeting with Lon Morris College, taking each of the top five spots in both the men's and women's sides of the relay-style race.
SFA's men each completed three laps of the 2,000-meter course on each leg of the two-man race, while the women took to laps apiece. The team of Adam Saloom and Ryan Tilotta crossed the line first among the Lumberjack teams on the men's side with a time of 38:91, while Lauren Smith and Amanda Walters led the way for the women with a 29:36 mark.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the effort of both teams," SFA head coach Cody Clark said. "Essentially, this was another workout for us, just against another jersey. Both sides competed hard, and now this gives us a barometer of where we are at to move forward."
Two of the SFA ladies' teams finished under the 30-minute mark, with Randi Wymer and Laurie Byrd joining the team of Smith and Walters with a time of 29:44. Meanwhile Harmon McClanahan and Moses Luevano finished next among the `Jacks with a time of 38:40 in the 24,000-meter relay.
The unattached team of Dennis Yeatts and Nick Guerra finished first among the men's teams, while current runners Xavier Rodriguez and Colby McCune came in at 38:34 as unattached as well.
SFA will compete in its first full meet of the year on Sept. 16 when it takes part in the Rice Invitational.
