SFA Women's Tennis Named 2011 ITA Scholar-Athletes

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Women's tennis team was recognized for their academic excellence this week as they were named 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes. As a team, the Women also earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for the second season in a row.
"I'm very lucky to coach a team full of highly intelligent and motivated girls," head coach Patrick Sullivan said. "Truthfully, most of them are more serious scholars than they are athletes, and rightfully so."
In order to earn the status of an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.50, be a varsity letterwinner and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. For a team to achieve ITA All-Academic Team honors, the team must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above.
"Even our kids who aspire to play on the pro tour understand that one day the ball is going to stop bouncing and they need to have a plan for what happens next," Sullivan said. "One of the hardest parts of getting older is having to give up on your childhood dreams one by one, but one of the many great things about college tennis is that it allows them to keep several options open if they work hard enough."
