NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Former Lumberjacks Bryson Myles and Chase Wier have each been named to the rosters for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game after standout first halves in their first season of pro ball after being selected in June's MLB Draft.
Myles, a sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Indians, was hampered in the middle of the season by a hamstring injury, but has still managed to hit .294 with a homer, eight RBI and has been successful in 11 of 12 stolen bases for the short-season Class A Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The reigning Southland Conference player of the year, Myles led the nation with 53 stolen bases in 2011 for the Lumberjacks and will play in the outfield for the American League affiliates.
Wier, a Nacogdoches native and 21st-round pick of the Florida Marlins, has been outstanding for the short-season Class A Jamestown Jammers. He has only allowed runs in two of his 14 relief appearances on the season and currently holds a 3-1 record and a sparkling 2.53 ERA. He allowed just two runs in his first 21.0 innings of professional work, and has struck out 20 hitters in 21.1 innings of work on the year, walking just nine and holding hitters to a .238 average.
He was coming off a breakout junior season, his first on the mound, in which he posted a 3-1 record in 21 appearances with a 3.06 ERA in 35.1 innings. He held hitters to just a .208 average in 2011 for SFA, fanning 30 hitters on the year.
Wier will come out of the bullpen for the National League affiliates squad.
The New York-Penn League All-Star Game is scheduled for August 16th in Lowell, Mass., the home of the Lowell Spinners.
