NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2011 Division I Track & Field All-Academic team Wednesday afternoon. Three Stephen F. Austin athletes were among the elite list of individuals to receive the award. The group of athletes represents collegiate track and field's best competitors in both athletics and academics.
Sophomore Clint Harris was the 2010 Southland conference discus champion who set the school record with a throw of 184-8, while classmate Cass Brown is not only an All-SLC athlete in the 400-meter dash, but a two-time all-conference selection who ran the anchor leg in the men's 4x400-meter relay that advanced to the NCAA championships.
Junior Adam Saloom earned All-SLC honors in 2010 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by finishing third overall with a time of 9:12.92. Saloom is the school record holder in the event and a two-time all-conference honoree who won the conference individual title this past season.
The track and field team recorded one of its best seasons in program history this past year. The Ladyjacks recorded the rare conference triple crown winning the team titles in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, while the `Jacks won their first outdoor conference championship in school history.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and met one of the following standards: for the indoor season, finish the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list and for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.
