NACOGDOCHES, Texas - It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Stephen F. Austin men's 1,600-meter relay team. The Lumberjacks replaced three legs of its talented squad from 2010 with freshmen and that is normally a recipe for a long season, but somebody forgot to tell that to the freshmen.
Led by the experience of a lone senior, SFA's relay team consists of upperclassman Donavon Sammons and freshmen Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder, Cass Brown and Josh Taylor. The team will look to advance into the 4x400-meter relay finals Thursday when they step on the track in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The relay semifinals are slated to begin at 8:20 p.m.
Should SFA advance to the finals, the youthful 'Jacks will seek to do the unthinkable and compete for the ultimate prize in the collegiate athletics Saturday at 1:50 p.m.
