NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced Tuesday the addition of Nick Shaw as a full-time member of his coaching staff for the 2011-12 season. Shaw, a former Lumberjack player, served as the program's administrative assistant last year.
Shaw's hiring comes after the departure of Kellen Sampson earlier this spring. Sampson left SFA to accept a position at Appalachian State.
"Nick did a fantastic job for us as our administrative assistant," Kaspar said. "He was one of the smartest and toughest players I ever coached and was instrumental in our two Southland Conference championships."
Shaw had a solid two-year career with the 'Jacks after transferring to SFA from Collin County Community College. The Arlington native helped lead the program to its first two Southland Conference titles, sharing the crown in 2007-08 and winning it outright the following season. SFA reached the postseason both years, going to the NIT in 2008 and making the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2009.
Not only did the Lumberjacks win two league titles, the team posted its best two-year stretch in the program's history at the NCAA Division I level, going 50-14 overall.
Shaw was a key part of that effort, starting all 64 games during his two years with the program. He finished with 397 career points and 350 career rebounds for an average of 5.5 boards per game. Shaw's career-high in scoring was 17 points against ULM in 2007, and he pulled down a career-best 19 rebounds against Southeastern Louisiana in 2009.
"Nick understands what I want and will do a good job teaching the players how I want them to play," Kaspar said. "Obviously, he has a lot to learn about recruiting, not having done that before, but he is a fast learner, and I know he'll work as hard in that area as he does in everything else."
Shaw spent the last year as a graduate assistant in the kinesiology and health science program at SFA. He was an instructor for multiple undergraduate classes and began his own work toward a graduate degree. In his role with the basketball team, Shaw handled an array of tasks, including video services, travel and meal arrangements and academic oversight.
