FRISCO, Texas - Junior Jarid Scarafiotti was named to the Southland Conference all-Academic first team and twin pitchers Jared and Jason West were each named to the second team, the league office announced on Monday.
It is the second consecutive season for Scarafiotti to be named to the league's top academic list and is still one of just two Lumberjacks to ever be named to the academic all-SLC first team. It is the first time for either of the West brothers to be named to the team.
Student-athletes across the league are not eligible for selection to the teamunless they are at least a sophomore in eligibility and have spent at least one full year on a Southland Conference roster.
Scarafiotti was the first team all-SLC catcher as a junior, finishing sixth in the league with a .350 batting average. He led hit five homers and led all SLC catchers with 45 RBI and even finished the season red hot, hitting safely in his last 12 games of the year and being named to the SLC Tournament all-tournament team after leading the `Jacks to the tournament title game.
The junior from Shreveport, La., also has held his own in the classroom, sporting a 3.59 ERA with a major in mathematics.
Each of the West brothers put together stellar years in their final seasons as Lumberjacks with each finishing as an honorable mention all-SLC selections at the end of the year. Jared, a starting pitcher, led the `Jacks in both ERA (3.08) and wins (7), while posting a career-high 58 strikeouts. He finished his career ranked in the top 10 all-time at SFA in strikeouts, and his 14 career victories is tied for second at the school. He parlayed his breakout season into a professional opportunity as he was signed to a free-agent deal with the New York Mets following the season.
SFA's stopper for the last two seasons, Jason West opened the year as a starter before being moved back to the bullpen where he excelled. The right-hander finished with a 4-3 record and 2.68 ERA, including 10 saves, which landed him second in the league. His 19 career saves is second only to Richard Folmer on the all-time list and is the most ever in a two-year span at SFA.
Oddly enough, the twins finished with identical academic marks, holding 3.33 GPAs in pursuit of master's degrees in kinesiology.
