DES MOINES, Iowa - The Stephen F. Austin men's 1,600-meter relay team finally stepped on the track to open competition in the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday morning after having their event postponed due to weather Thursday evening.
The Lumberjacks' youthful squad, which consisted of senior Donavon Sammons and freshmen Hampton Hawkins, Torin Crowder and Cass Brown recorded a time of 3:10.39 to place 19th in the country. The 'Jacks' time bested teams from the ACC, SEC and Pac 12 Conferences.
The future is very bright for the relay team as it loses only one senior and returns the other three legs for three more seasons. With the addition of alternate Josh Taylor, who is also a freshman, the Lumberjacks expect to be a contender on the national scene for years to come.
