EUGENE, Ore. - Southland Conference Coach of the Year Phil Olson, and his reigning Southland Conference Champion men's and women's track and field teams will be in Eugene, Oregon, Thursday through Saturday to compete in the NCAA West Preliminary rounds at Hayward Field. The top 12 athletes in every event, and the top eight relay teams will receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The preliminary rounds begin Thursday at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin throw. There will be preliminaries for seven field events before the track events get under way at 3:30 Thursday afternoon (women's 400-meter hurdles).
The SFA men and women will be sending a total of 20 athletes to the meet competing in 17 different events. SFA has several athletes who enter the meet ranked among the region's elite. Junior Nick McCloud heads to Oregon ranked ninth in the 110-meter hurdles, while senior Adam Wolfe is currently 12th in the javelin. Junior Jon Arthur, who will be qualified in both the shot put and hammer throw, enters the weekend currently ranked 12th in the shot put.
SFA is coming off its first sweep of the SLC Outdoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month. It marked the first outdoor title in program history for the men, and it was the sixth-straight title for the women. The Ladyjacks recorded the rare track and field triple crown this season winning the conference title in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.
