FRISCO, Texas - Lauren Smith was named the Southland Conference women's athlete of the year and Rnadi Plentl was an all-conference choice for the 2011 cross country season after their performances on Monday at the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships.
Smith won the sixth individual women's title for SFA in cross country, completing the 6,000-meter course at Piney Woods Country Club in Nacogdoches in 20:57.3, breaking her own course record and winning the race by 45 seconds. She is the sixth Ladyjack to be named the SLC cross country women's athlete of the year, and the first since Ashley Monteau in 2005.
Plentl also showed strongly once again, finishing third overall in the race and earning an automatic selection to the all-conference squad. She crossed in 21:47.5 to earn her first cross country honors of her career.
Both Smith and Plentl will be in action in two weeks when SFA travels to Waco, Texas, for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships on Nov. 12.
