NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second time this season Stephen F. Austin freshman forward Chelsea Raymond was selected the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week while Breanne Vernon was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Raymond had a milestone weekend, recording her third hat trick of the season in a 6-0 win Sunday over Nicholls State. The Irving, Texas (MacArthur H.S.), native, also scored a goal in a 4-0 victory versus Southeastern Louisiana last Friday. Raymond's four goals pushed her season total to 17, a single-season record in SFA history, while also raising her point total to 39 points, another single-season school record.
Raymond currently ranks top 10 in the nation in five different categories: points per game (6th- 2.44), goals per game (5th- 1.063), goals (5th- 17), points (7th- 39) and game-winning goals (5th- 6).
Vernon disrupted several drives into Stephen F. Austin territory last weekend and helped the Ladyjacks' backline limit Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana to no goals and just five shots in two games played. The Calgary, Alberta (Ernest Manning H.S.), native, is part of a defense that has recorded a school-record nine consecutive shutouts and not allowed a goal in conference play.
The Ladyjacks will be looking to complete a perfect conference schedule this Friday when they host rival Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. at the SFA Soccer Complex.
