FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin junior Lauren Smith was named the Southland Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, the first time a Ladyjack has claimed the honor since the 2009 season.
In her third race of the season, Smith recorded her third top-five finish at the Alabama Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday. Smith, a native of Lake Jackson, Texas (Brazoswood H.S.), ran the 5,002-meter course in a time of 17:27.11 to place fourth overall and lead the Ladyjacks to a eighth-place finish out of 14 teams. Smith finished just four seconds behind the third-place finisher.
It is the first such honor for Smith, the reigning SLC newcomer of the year, and is the first time SFA has claimed a women's athlete of the week honor since Stephanie Ganter in October of 2009.
SFA will be back in action on Oct. 31 when it hosts the 2011 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships at Piney Woods Country Club. The Ladyjacks will be looking to defend their 2010 league crown at the event.
