HOUSTON - Although classes have not started back at Stephen F. Austin, the men's and women's track and field team opened the 2011 indoor season at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston, Texas Friday evening. SFA's athletes combined for several top-10 finishes on the opening day.
Freshman Cass Brown made a strong impression in his first meet at the collegiate level. The Lewisville, Texas native clocked a time of 49.49 to place fifth overall. The team of Edric Williams, Hampton Hawkins, Sherman Rosborough, and Ty Thomas recorded a fifth-place showing in the 4X400-meter relay with their time of 3:24.94. Senior Sherman Rosborough clocked a time of 22.88 to finish 10th overall in the men's 200 meters. Freshman Nathan Collier jumped ahead of two UTSA runners to post a top-10 finish in the mile run. Collier recorded a time of 4:25.79 to finish ninth overall.
It was a similar story in the field events for the Lumberjacks. Junior Cameron Cochran cleared a height of 14-1.25 to place fifth overall, while sophomore Jim Ed Hughes continues SFA's traditionally strong weight throw squad with a third-place finish (51-7.75).
Freshman Paige McCutcheon got the Ladyjacks out to a quick start in the track events when she clocked a time of 25.55 to finish fourth overall. Sophomore Crystal Walker posted a fourth-place finish in the women's long jump `B' finals Friday evening. She recorded a mark of 17-4.25 to place fourth overall.
The SFA track and field teams return to action Saturday morning when they will be in College Station, Texas, to compete in the Conference Challenge. The meet will showcase several top-10 programs on both the men's and women's side, and will be scored on a conference basis.
