NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin cross country teams open the 2010 season Friday when they host the Lumberjack Opener. SFA will compete against Northwestern State and Centenary College in a relay-style meet held at Pecan Acres Park.
"As in past years, we'll treat it as our workout for the day," SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling said of the meet. "It'll give us a little bit of insight into where we are, fitness-wise."
The women's race will start at 5:30 p.m. with the men's race set to begin at 6:15.
SFA begins the season with eight returners - including two redshirt freshmen - and three newcomers on the men's side. The Ladyjacks bring back six letterwinners with three true freshmen and a sophomore transfer.
"With the returners I know pretty much what they're going to do," Snelling said. "Even though the situation is very low-key, it will be interesting to see what the freshmen do and how they handle it."
The course is a 2,000-meter loop through Pecan Park. The competitors will be paired up in teams and will trade out laps on the loop in a relay style. The women will run two circuits each for a total of 8,000 meters, while the men will do three laps each for a total of 12,000 meters.
"It's always nice to have this meet over here at the park, in terms of our training environment and the facilities we have at our disposal," Snelling said. "It's a nice, soft surface, and it's in great shape."
