Ladyjacks Race to Big Lead at SLC Championships

NORMAN, Okla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks score 62.5 points to lead the women's standing after the first day of competition at the 2010 Southland Conference Indoor Championships Friday evening in Norman, Okla. The Lumberjacks are currently fifth overall with 25.5 points. The Ladyjacks posted three individual titles and five all-conference honors on the opening day, while the `Jacks added a sixth all-conference finish.
Senior thrower Frednisha Marshall continues to make it look easy in the women's weight throw winning her third consecutive individual conference title. Marshall improved her standing in the nation with a mark of 66-1.75.
Classmate Tabitha Riley recorded her first conference individual title winning the pentathlon. Riley scored 3,635 points to win the event. The Ladyjacks third individual title came from Camelia Sams in the long jump. Sams recorded a mark of 19-11.50 to take the title.
The Ladyjacks added all-conference honors in the high jump. Sophomore Carrie Hahn just missed an individual title by clearing a height of 5-7.00 to finish second. She beat out teammate Ebbonye Johnson who finished third overall with a mark of 5-5.00.
For the Lumberjacks, senior Matt Langdon added a third-place finish in the weight throw to earn all-league accolades. Langdon recorded a throw of 62-2.25 to finish third overall. SFA is in position to record some more all-conference honors in the heptathlon. SFA enters the final day of competition with four athletes in the field's top eight. Freshman Josh Cravens is currently second overall followed by Andrew Plentl who is in third.
SFA also recorded several scoring performances Friday. Sophomore Stephanie Ganter just missed all-conference honors in the women's 5,000 meters. Ganter was fourth overall clocking a time of 17:39.12. Junior Amy Shackelford was sixth overall clocking a time of 17:56.03 in the event. Freshman Alicia Jacks finished tied for seventh in the high jump clearing a height of 5-3.00. Jacks also recorded a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon (3,460 points). Crystal Walker recorded a mark of 18-8.00 to place sixth overall, while Johnson was eighth (18-1.75) in the event.
The Lumberjacks placed three in the top eight of the men's 5,000 meters. Dennis Yeats recorded a fifth-place finish (14:56.35), while senior Keith Mahipala was seventh crossing the line with a time of 15:04.15. Adam Saloom scored a point for SFA in the event with his eighth-place finish (15:15.42). The team of Monroe Whaley, Ronald Wade, Jonus Rodriguez and Harmon McClanahan were seventh in the distance medley relay (10:38.71). Freshman Marcus Rosendall cleared a height of 6-6.75 to finish seventh in high jump. Along with his shot at all-conference honors in the heptathlon, Jones recorded a fifth-place with his mark of 15-3.00. Sophomore Jon Arthur, who is also a serious threat in the shot put, recorded a fourth-place finish (58-11.25) in the men's weight throw. Classmate Kyle Bishop finished eighth in the event (53-8.50).
SFA returns to action Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathlon. The field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's triple jump. The finals of the track events are slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women's mile.
