HUNTSVILLE, Texas - For the third time in three years the Ladyjacks and Sam Houston State went to five sets, and for the third consecutive time it was the Bearkats that pulled out the comeback victory, taking a 3-2 win (21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 24-26, 15-13) on Wednesday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The loss is the fourth in a row for the Ladyjacks (8-12, 1-4) the longest winless streak for SFA since 2007 and the first time the squad has ever dropped four in a row in league play. The Bearkats (8-10, 2-3) were able to pick up their third win in a row over SFA for just the second time in the series' history and the first time since the early 1990s.
Kelsey Owens and Arielle Daron each had 14 kills apiece and MC Bottles had 11, but the Ladyjacks only hit .159 as a team and had no answer for Bearkat outside hitter Carli Kolbe, who took more than twice as many swings as any of her teammates, but still carried the offense with a 26-kill scoring output.
Madison Hanlnan set a new career high with 29 digs and Sabrina Burns had a team-high five blocks, but SFA was unable to capitalize on a number of Sam Houston miscues, including 16 Bearkat service errors.
The Ladyjacks held both a 1-0 and 2-1 lead after taking the first and third sets, but each time Sam Houston was able to answer with two narrow two-point wins to eventually send the match to five sets where they were able to erase a late 13-11 SFA lead with the match's final four points.
SFA will have a chance to put their losing skid to a close on Saturday when it hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday from William R. Johnson Coliseum.
