NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The fifth-ranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks jumped out to a 13-0 lead and rode that to victory Saturday afternoon against Central Arkansas, 30-7. The 'Jacks, who recorded their fifth-straight win, moved to 5-1 on the season, and 2-0 in conference play, while UCA (3-3/0-2 SLC) dropped its third consecutive game. The victory also marked the team's ninth consecutive win at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Another Southland Conference career mark fell for senior quarterback Jeremy Moses. The Baytown, Texas, native found sophomore Cordell Roberson from one yard out for the games first score. It was the 101st touchdown pass of Moses career, which gave him the lead surpassing former UCA quarterback and current assistant coach Nathan Brown. Moses finished the game 28-of-42 for 333 yards and three touchdowns. He also finished the game only nine yards shy of becoming the league's all-time leader in total offense.
Following the scoring strike to Roberson, the Lumberjacks' special teams made a game-changing play. Redshirt freshman Ortavious Hypolite blocked Eddie Carmona's punt, which was picked up and returned 23 yards for the score by junior Romeo Robinson.
The Bears were able to answer less than four minutes later when Nathan Dick capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive with a one-yard pass to Terrence Bobo, cutting the lead to 13-7. But that would be as close as the Bears would get as the Lumberjacks closed out the game by tacking on 17 more points.
The Bears were victimized by miscues all afternoon having two kicks blocked, losing two fumbles, throwing an interception and recording 10 penalties for 84 yards. The offenses posted similar numbers; SFA gained 452 yards of total offense, while the Bears finished with 411.
Sophomore Grayln Crawford led the team with seven catches for 86 yards, while Jeremy Barnes hauled in five passes for 40 yards and a score. Roberson caught the game's first and last touchdowns of the day. He finished the game with four catches for 73 yards.
Senior Rainey Sternes led the team with nine tackles. Classmate Kenneth Charles recorded six tackles, including 2.5 tackles for losses, and 1.5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and broke up a pass.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Oct. 23, when they travel to Houston, Texas, to take on Sam Houston State in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods. The game against the Bearkats is slated to kickoff at 2 p.m. from Reliant Stadium. Tickets for the game are available through the SFA Ticket Office at (936) 468-JACK.
