HOUSTON, Texas - Senior quarterback Jeremy Moses completed 30 passes for 418 yards and four touchdowns, and set the Southland Conference all-time total offense record, as Stephen F. Austin recorded a 31-28 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday at Reliant Stadium. The win moves SFA to 6-1 on the season, and gives SFA sole possession of first place with a 3-0 league record.
The Lumberjacks took a 14-point lead early in the third quarter, and led by 10 with 13:19 remaining. SHSU capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive with a D.J. Morrow seven-yard touchdown to cut the lead to three-points with just over seven minutes remaining. The Lumberjack defense would make that lead stand as SFA won its second consecutive in the series.
The Bearkats held the football for nearly 15 minutes longer than SFA, but the 'Jacks rolled up 447 yards of total offense.
The 'Jacks jumped out to an early 14-0 lead behind a 20-of-32 first-half performance from senior Jeremy Moses. The Baytown, Texas native, found sophomore Jeremy Barnes from six yards out with 8:29 remaining in the opening quarter. SFA was back on the attack at the end of the quarter when Moses hit sophomore Cordell Roberson from 58-yards out.
Roberson finished the half with five catches for 162 yards and two scores. Four of Roberson's five receptions were of 20 yards or more. Classmate Gralyn Crawford finished the half with five catches for 70 yards. Moses, who broke Southland Conference career record for total offense on his first pass of the game, finished the opening 30 minutes with 314 yards passing and three touchdown passes.
The Bearkats immediately responded. Following a fake punt, Sam Houston State cracked the scoreboard when Richard Sincere record a 32-yard run. The Bearkats recovered an onsides kick and immediately went back on the attack tying the game with 11:19 remaining in the half. SFA closed out the half by regaining the lead when Roberson recorded his second of two first-half touchdowns (34 yards).
Freshman Kris Lott led SFA with eight receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Crawford added seven catches for 88 yards. Roberson did all his damage in the first half with five receptions for 162 yards and two scores. Freshman Caleb Nelson and sophomore Derrick Choice led the defense with 13 tackles.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday when they host Texas State at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game against the Bobcats is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
