SFA Finishes Strong at Houston Invite and Multis

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team closed out the two-day Houston Invite and Multis competition hosted by the University of Houston Saturday evening. After recording three individual titles Friday, SFA came close to recording several more on the meet's final day of competition.
Freshman Josh Cravens made a huge jump in the standings on the final day of heptathlon competition. Cravens moved from fourth to finish second with his score of 4,739 points. Sophomore Nick McCloud also just missed an individual title in the men's 200 meters. He clocked a time of 22.10 to finish second overall, and was the meet's top collegiate finisher. McCloud returned to the track and also recorded a second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (7.95). In the event preliminary rounds McCloud clocked and SFA school record, and NCAA provisional mark of 7.90.
Freshman Joe Barb recorded a third-place finish in the men's 400-meter dash (49.05), beating out teammate, and defending indoor conference champion Chris Moody who clocked a 49.22. Moody's time was good enough to finish fifth overall, less than a day after winning the 400-meter `B' finals yesterday.
The SFA men recorded a strong finish in the 3,000 meters placing four finishers in the top six. Led by Xavier Rodriguez who finished second with a time of 8:34.42, he finished just ahead of Adam Saloom (8:38.89), Keith Mahipala (8:39.12) and Dennis Yeats (8:39.33) who crossed the line in consecutive order to finish 4-5-6.
Other SFA athletes who recorded strong outings included Travis Beavers in the 800 meters. Beavers finished fourth overall with a time of 1:57.35 in the event. Sophomore Jon Arthur finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 52-11.00.
Less than 24 hours after winning the women's weight throw, senior Frednisha Marshall recorded a throw of 47-10.00 to finish second in the women's shot put. Senior Kaitlyn Andrews also recorded a top-five finish in the event. She recorded a toss of 44-9.50 to place fifth overall.
Sophomore Stephanie Ganter recorded a fifth-place finish in the women's 3,000 meters crossing the finish line with a time of 10:05.53. The Ladyjacks' 1,600-meter relay team finished third clocking a time of 3:53.65. SFA's `A' team outkicked the SFA `B' squad who finished fourth with a time of 3:55.95. The Ladyjacks distance medley relay team also posted a top-five finish recording a time of 12:43.52 to finish fourth overall.
Other Ladyjacks that recorded strong outings Saturday included sophomore Carrie Hahn. Hahn cleared a height of 5-5.00 to finish fifth overall. Junior Camelia Sams finished fourth in the triple jump (38-11.00).
