NACOGDOCHES, Texas -
2009 Schedule
The Stephen F. Austin cross country program announced Wednesday its 2009 competition schedule. The slate features three races leading up to the Southland Conference Championships, with the regional championship to follow.
SFA will open the season on Sept. 4 with the Islander Open, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The teams will then have nearly a month off from competition before running in the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree on Oct. 3. During that month off, SFA will host the Brooks Lumberjack Invitational, its annual high school meet.
The following week, SFA will race in the Florida State Invitational on Oct. 10, then begin the championship portion of its schedule on Oct. 31 with the Southland Conference Championships in Corpus Christi.
Two weeks later, Baylor will host the NCAA South Central Regional Championships. Should any SFA runners advance to the NCAA Championships, that race will be held on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
"I like this year's schedule," said SFA cross country coach Lou Snelling. "September allows us to just focus on training. In October, we get a couple of good meets in to get us used to racing again. Oklahoma State is a solid meet, historically, and Florida State will be a high-level meet with good teams. Then we get another phase where we can finish up our fitness and be ready to go at conference and at regionals."
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are coming off a solid 2008 season. Both teams finished second in last year's SLC Championships and combined to post four All-SLC performances. More importantly, both squads return all five of their top runners from a year ago.
