
Phil Olson Honored by University

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field coach Phil Olson received the Joe Richardson Track Award Friday at the 2009 SFA Alumni Association Coaches Awards Luncheon.
Olson guided the Ladyjack track and field team to Southland Conference titles during the 2009 indoor and outdoor seasons. The Ladyjacks recorded 13 All-SLC finishes, won four individual titles and set two school records during the outdoor season. The SFA women posted 13 all-conference marks, four individual titles and set three school records and one conference record during the indoor championships.
Under Olson's guidance, junior thrower Frednisha Marshall posted one of the best seasons in school history. Marshall, the 2009 SLC Indoor Most Outstanding Field Athlete, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the weight throw finishing third overall to earn All-America honors.
Olson's athletes also got the job done in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year. Four athletes were named to the 2009 USTFCCCA All-Academic team, while the Ladyjacks were one of 131 teams to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. Sophomore distance runner Amy Shackelford was honored by the league earning 2009 SLC Student-Athlete of the Year honors.
During Olson's tenure, SFA has recorded 13 SLC titles in track and field cross country and had six All-Americans. He is a six-time SLC Coach of the Year honoree, and earned USTCA South Central District Coach of the Year honors in 2003.
