FRISCO, Texas - Four Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field/cross country athletes have been named to the Academic All-Southland Conference teams announced league officials Wednesday afternoon. In addition to earning academic all-conference honors, sophomore Amy Shackelford was named the 2009 SLC Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
Along with Shackelford, juniors Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye, Keith Mahipala and Frednisha Marshall and sophomore Kaitlyn Andrews have also received Academic All-SLC honors.
Athletes must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, achieved sophomore academic standing and have competed in at least 50 percent of all competitions. Every SFA honoree made a significant impact on the track and in the classroom.
Shackelford made a push for SLC Outdoor Track MVP honors after her dominating performance at the SLC Championships. Shackelford separated herself from the competition to cruise to an easy victory in the 10,000 meters. She returned to the track less than 48 hours later to win the women's 5,000 meters.
Marshall is a 2009 Indoor Track and Field All-America after setting the school record in the weight throw numerous times this season. A four-time All-SLC selection during the 2009 season, she won conference individual titles in the weight throw, hammer throw and the outdoor shot put.
Egboba-Waye was a five-time All-SLC selection during the 2009 indoor and outdoor season. A versatile athlete who competed in three different event areas, Egboba-Waye posted four school records during the year, and won the 2009 SLC Indoor Long Jump title.
Mahipala has proven himself as one of the league's top steeplechasers over the course of the past three seasons. In 2009, Mahipala took that to another level dominating the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the SLC Outdoor Championships, and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
