NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin athletics department gathered in the Champions Room Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the Ladyjacks 2009 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field title. It is the second time this season that SFA has honored the women's track and field team.
The Ladyjacks, who also won the 2009 SLC Indoor title, recorded only the program's second conference outdoor title with a dominating 173.50 - 135.50 victory over second-place Texas State. The Ladyjacks were led by junior Frednisha Marshall and freshman Amy Shackelford who recorded dual individual titles. Marshall won the women's hammer throw and shot put, while Shackelford posted dominating victories in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
The SFA track and field program has seen unprecedented success under head coach Phil Olson. A five-time SLC Coach of the Year, Olson has brought 13 SLC titles to Nacogdoches during his 10 years on campus.
Over the course of the three-day event, the SFA men and women combined to win five SLC individual titles, and 10 All-SLC performances. SFA returns to action this weekend in two separate meets. The majority of the team will travel to Natchitoches, La., to compete in the NSU Last Chance Qualifier, while freshman Mitch Ownbey will travel to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Louisville Twilight meet. Ownbey will compete in the 5,000 meters in Louisville.
