
Ladyjacks Win SLC Outdoor Title

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second time in school history, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks have won the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field title. The Ladyjacks, who also won the 2009 SLC Indoor title, dominated the competition outscoring Texas State, 173.50 - 135.50, Sunday at Fletcher Garner Track. It also marks the first time in school history that SFA has won the track and field title in Nacogdoches. The Lumberjacks finished fifth overall with 98.50 points.
SFA recorded nine All-SLC performances, two school records and one SLC Individual title Sunday. The SFA men and women recorded 10 All-SLC finishes, and five SLC individual titles during the meet.
Sophomore Amy Shackelford won the Ladyjacks' first individual title of the day, and her second of the meet. Friday Shackelford opened the meet with an impressive victory in the women's 10,000 meters, and Sunday she followed that up with a win in the 5,000. Shackelford won the event with a time of 17:16.52. Freshman Stephanie Ganter, who also finished second in the women's 10,000 meters, posted conference runner-up finish in the 5,000 as well. The 2009 SLC Indoor Freshman of the Year, recorded the conference runner-up finish in the event with a time of 17:36.34.
Freshman Mitchell Ownbey led a strong group of SFA runners in the men's 5,000 meters. Ownbey was one of four runners to finish in the top eight of the event. Ownbey finished second with a time of 14:28.86. Sophomore Dennis Yeats was fifth overall with a time of 15:11.91, while junior Keith Mahipala was sixth (15:14.71). Freshman Harmon McClanahan recorded the final scoring spot with his eighth-place finish (15:20.75).
Junior Brian Wall just missed recording the men's first SLC individual title of the day with his time of 1:51.37 to finish second in the 800 meters. Freshman Lauren Watts made a late rally in the women's 400-meter hurdles to finish second overall. Watts rallied from the back of the pack with 125 meters remaining to surge into second place with a time of 1:01.25.
The SFA relay teams scored big points for both the men and women Sunday recorded three All-SLC finishes. The Ladyjacks' 4X100-meter relay team of Kelia Crawford, Arteria Sterns, Camelia Sams and Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye recorded SFA's first all-conference honor of the day when they finished third in the event with a time of 45.91. Their time set a new school record by two one-hundredths of a second. Not be outdone by the SFA women, the Lumberjacks also turned in an all-conference finish in the 4X100-meter relay. The team of Sherman Rosborough, Nick McCloud, Ty Thomas and Chris Moody finished third with a time of 40.82. The Ladyjacks' team of Kelia Crawford, Katrina Turner, Mary Dickerson and Lauren Watts closed out the women's competition with a second-place finish in the 4X400-meter relay (3:42.16). The SFA men's 4X400-meter relay team finished fifth with a school-record and regional qualifying time of 3:09.99 in the event.
Egboba-Waye posted her second All-SLC honor of the day with her time of 13.73 in the 100-meter hurdles. Egboba-Waye's regional qualifying time also set a new school record. The Ladyjacks added another second-place finish in the women's 400-meter dash. Freshman Mary Dickerson led a trio of Ladyjacks in the event by recording a time of 55.09 to earn all-conference honors. Freshman Katrina Turner just missed All-SLC honors with her fourth-place finish (56.82). Sophomore Kelia Crawford was sixth with her time of 56.88.
Only 24 hours after earning all-conference honors in the women's long jump, junior Camelia Sams returned to Fletcher Garner Track in the triple jump. Sams just missed her second all-conference honor finishing fifth in the event with a jump of 39-2.50. Junior Josh Cruse finished fifth in the men's triple jump with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 49-2.25. Freshman Danielle Burchett just missed and all-conference honor with her fourth-place finish in the women's 800 meters. She clocked a time 2:14.70 in the event.
Freshman Makayla Elliott just missed all-conference honors with her fourth-place finish in the women's discus. She recorded a throw of 150-8, while sophomore Kaitlyn Andrews was sixth in the event with a mark of 145-10. The Ladyjacks placed two freshmen in the top eight of the women's pole vault Sunday morning. Macy Wade cleared a height of 11-1.75 to finish sixth overall, while Sarah Sloan recorded a mark of 10-8.00 to finish eighth overall. In the men's pole vault David McKenzie recorded a mark of 15-1.00 to finish tied for sixth place.
In the men's 400-meter dash junior Chris Moody posted a time of 47.27 to finish fifth overall. Classmate Travis Beavers posted a time of 53.93 to finish fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Arteria Sterns tacked on a seventh-place finish in the women's 100-meter dash with her time of 11.98. Junior Matt Langdon finished seventh in the men's discus with a throw of 159-10.
The SFA men and women's track and field team returns to action Friday, May 29th, when they travel to Norman, Okla., to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships. The regional championship meet is a two-day event.
