SFA Track & Field Looks Strong in Natchitoches

NATCHITOCHES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team looked strong at the Northwestern State Invitational Saturday in Natchitoches, La. With the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships only two weeks away SFA punched a few more tickets to the NCAA Regional Championships at the end of May.
SFA finished the day recording five individual titles, five NCAA regional marks and one Northwestern State Invitational meet record. Junior thrower Frednisha Marshall posted regional qualifiers in the shot put and weight throw. She finished second in the shot (48-4.00), and set a new meet record in the weight throw her toss of 183-10.
Classmate Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye posted the team's third regional qualifier of the day when she recorded a jump of 19-9.00 to finish third overall in the long jump. Junior Matt Langdon followed with a regional qualifying mark in the men's weight throw. Langdon was fifth overall with a throw of 183-9.00. Freshman Nick McCloud just missed an individual title, but recorded the fifth and final qualifier of the day when he clocked a time of 14.03 to finish second in the 110-meter hurdles.
Senior Kelsea David won the women's pole vault when she cleared a height of 11-11.75, while freshman Mary Dickerson posted at time of 56.52 to win the women's 400-meter dash.
Sophomore Meredith Blocker was the lead runner in a Ladyjack one-two sweep of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Blocker clocked a time of 11:41.29 to win the event, while freshman Randi Wymer finished second with a time of 12:07.26. Classmate Lauren Watts won the women's 400-meter hurdles by crossing the finish line with a time of 1:03.20.
Junior Travis Beavers recorded time of 53.98 to win the men's 400-meter hurdles, while classmate Josh Cruse just missed adding another title to the SFA haul in the triple jump. Cruse was second overall with his jump of 49-6.25.
SFA returns to action Wednesday with a mid-week event. The SFA men and women's team will be in Houston, Texas Wednesday to compete in the Rice Twilight Invitational.
